The best preparation is the traditional college preparatory sequence of courses. A strong background in Mathematics and English (with emphasis on grammar and composition) is encouraged. A recommended program of studies for architecture includes three years of English, three years of Mathematics (including Trigonometry), three years of Laboratory Sciences (including Physics), three years of Social Sciences, and one year of Studio Art with an emphasis on Drawing and Composition.
While Kent State University is an open admissions university which offers admission to Ohio students who are graduates of accredited high schools, admission to the College of Architecture and Environmental Design is highly selective. Of the students who apply each year to architecture, approximately 90 are enrolled in the Fall Semester as architecture majors.
Students not admitted to the program may qualify for admission to the College of Architecture and Environmental Design as a General Major. These students may be admitted to the Summer Studio program which follows the first year. Requirements for admission to the Summer Studio program include a minimum of 24 credits with a 2.75 GPA. Required courses include English I and II and Algebra and Trigonometry or regular Calculus, Art History I, and Architecture History I recommended. Students who are accepted and who successfully complete First Year Design Studio I and II during the Summer will proceed with the normal second year curriculum. A personal interview with the Architecture Program Coordinator is also recommended during the Spring semester of their first year.
Review of applications will start FEBRUARY 1st.
All applications must-include the $25.00 application fee, official American College Test (ACT)/Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores and an official high school transcript which shows class rank and course work in ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades as well as the courses which are being taken or will be taken in the senior year. Transcripts which do not show class rank and senior courses cannot be considered. All completed applications received by the deadline will be reviewed. Applicants will be considered based on the following criteria:
- High school grade point average
- High school class rank
- SAT ans ACTscores
Good chances of admission are offered by: a GPA> 3.0, a high-school class rank higher than 80%, a SAT score > 1150, a ACT score > 25 (with English > 23 and Math > 28).
Applicants will be notified of their admission status by March 1st. Those offered admission into the Architecture Program must notify their acceptance by returning a copy of the letter duly signed to the Architecture Admissions Office by April 1st.
