The Role And Mission of Kent State University The College of Architecture & Environmental Design (CAED) at Kent State University is dedicated to the education of creative, knowledgeable, and responsible professionals committed to the enrichment of the built environment. The College is a resource for the research and development of advanced theory, technology, and strategies of environmental design, and for the dissemination of knowledge and cross-disciplinary collaborations that benefit communities, public organizations, and institutions.
The College seeks to offer students a breadth of understanding and professional skills within a diverse range of educational and professional options.
The College is committed to serving the communities of Northeast Ohio. Through faculty and student environmental design research and the Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio, the College is a major contributor to the life and culture of Northeast Ohio.
The College is committed to expanding student awareness of the diversity of world cultures and supports a well established study abroad program.
CAED Student Learning Goals and Objectives:
The College provides a learning environment and educational opportunities that will enable students to achieve the competencies necessary to perform in the environmental design professions.
In order to pursue the above general objectives within the framework of Collegiate and University objectives, the college is committed to:
A. Provide the opportunity for securing a broad base of general knowledge in the social sciences and humanities so that the student may better understand the values and attitudes held by society relative to the environment.
B. Provide the opportunity for securing a general knowledge in the physical sciences so that students may better understand the potential of technology in the development of physical environments.
C. Provide students with an understanding of environmental design, including both design theory/studio and technical aspects, which will equip the student to pursue, with confidence, entry into the profession or additional academic study.
D. Provide students with flexibility so that the program choices may be made consistent with the student's achievements, aptitudes and goals.
E. Encourage individual and group research in the pursuit of professional knowledge and creative activity.
F. Develop an awareness of professional ethics and responsibility.
G. Emphasize the importance of life long learning, continuing study, and self-evaluation.
H. Create an awareness of the important relationships and encourage collaborations between architecture, urban design, interior design, landscape architecture, related engineering professions, and other disciplines.
I. Encourage participation and leadership in community life in order to assist others in bringing order and beauty to the physical environment.
J. Promote an understanding of world cultures and the importance of international collaboration in the profession through international study, as well as faculty and student exchange programs.
