BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE
Admission Requirements

FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The best preparation is the traditional college preparatory sequence of courses. A strong background in Mathematics and English (with emphasis on grammar and composition) is encouraged. A recommended program of studies for architecture includes three years of English, three years of Mathematics (including Trigonometry), three years of Laboratory Sciences (including Physics), three years of Social Sciences, and one year of Studio Art with an emphasis on Drawing and Composition.

While Kent State University is an open admissions university which offers admission to Ohio students who are graduates of accredited high schools, admission to the College of Architecture and Environmental Design is highly selective. Of the students who apply each year to architecture, approximately 90 are enrolled in the Fall Semester as architecture majors.

Students not admitted to the program may qualify for admission to the College of Architecture and Environmental Design as a General Major. These students may be admitted to the Summer Studio program which follows the first year. Requirements for admission to the Summer Studio program include a minimum of 24 credits and a minimum 2.75 GPA. Required courses include English I, Algebra and Trigonometry, Calculus (recommended), Art History I, and Architecture History I (recommended). Students who are accepted and who successfully complete First Year Design Studio I and II during the Summer will proceed with the traditional second year curriculum.

High school applications are due by JANUARY 31st.

All high school applications must-include the $25.00 application fee, official American College Test (ACT)/Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores and an official high school transcript which shows class rank and course work in ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades as well as the courses which are being taken or will be taken in the senior year. Transcripts which do not show class rank and senior courses cannot be considered. All completed applications received by the deadline will be reviewed. Applicants will be considered based on the following criteria:

  • High school grade point average
  • High school class rank
  • SAT and/or ACTscores

Admission requirements include a GPA a least 3.0, high-school class rank should be upper 20%, an SAT score greater than 1180, an ACT score at least 25 composite (with English > 25 and Math > 25).
