The large town of Kez'marok is four miles up the Poprad River from Spis'ska Bela. Like Levoc'a, it was once inhabited mostly by German-speakers and for centuries rivaled Levoc'a for dominance of the Spis' area. The Lutheran school known as the Lyceum, built around 1550, was famous for its huge library. The local castle was, around 1720, the home of Count Thokoly, the Protestant anti-Habsburg rebel.
